Feeling anxious? Acupuncture can help
Everyone can experience anxiety at some time in their lives,
but when it becomes an everyday occurrence it can start to interfere with
everyday life. You may feel unpleasant symptoms such as increased heart rate, disturbed
breathing, trembling and sweating and a sense of apprehension. You may feel that you cannot cope as well at college
or work, and the anxiety may create problems in your personal relationships.
Acupuncture has been shown to help with anxiety in several studies, by helping reduce feelings of anxiety and insomnia (Errington-Evans 2012). In Chinese medical theory, anxiety can have several causes, including emotional stress, irregular diet and overwork.
Acupuncture can help you by treating the cause of your anxiety rather than just the symptoms, which can lead to long-term benefits and change. Acupuncture is safe and gentle and can work alongside any other treatment you may be receiving.
Chinese medicine works with “Qi”, which is understood as being vital force or energy. Acupuncture aims to harmonize the flow of Qi around your body, by removing blockages and facilitating its flow. Your acupuncture treatment will involve needling some acupuncture points to help you relax while also treating the root cause of your anxiety.
In Chinese Medicine we see each patient holistically, which means that we tailor the treatment to each individual taking into account any other conditions that you may have. Together with your acupuncturist you can discuss how many treatments may be needed depending on the length of time you have been experiencing anxiety, but you should still see an immediate reduction in your anxiety after your first session.
